  10. This is one small lap in the 
  11. first wave of the tide that's 
  12. building and gathering, ready to 
  13. sweep over the future.
  14.  
  15. In a real sense this IS the 
  16. future -- Electronic Publishing. 
  17. Like other computer-related de- 
  18. velopments, it changes every day.
  19.  
  20. A few months ago an announcement 
  21. party in the Big Apple heralded 
  22. the launching of a major new 
  23. authoring program.
  24.  
  25. Honored guests included such heavy
  26. hitters in the fiction writing 
  27. trade as Tom Clancy, Stephen King,
  28. Michael Crichton, Anne Rice, and
  29. Amy Tan.
  30.  
  31. Robert Gottlieb, executive vice- 
  32. president of the William Morris 
  33. talent agency, told the guests 
  34. that "It's bigger than the 
  35. Industrial Revolution. At this 
  36. stage in the game," he said, 
  37. "it's bigger than the motion- 
  38. picture business. There are 
  39. more dollars at stake."
  40.  
  41. At this point electronic 
  42. publishing is useful mostly 
  43. for reference, technical, 
  44. scientific, and how-to-do-it 
  45. books (of which this is one).
  46.  
  47. Visionaries in the ranks of 
  48. publishers, users and writers, 
  49. alike, await with impatience the 
  50. day when a personal digital       
  51. assistant (PDA) becomes practi- 
  52. cal for the general user.
  53.  
  54. Then, a library of several dozen
  55. popular fact-based books and 
  56. light fiction may be carried in 
  57. briefcase or purse.

  59. In the meantime, here's a useful
  60. e-book for any writer.
